October 2023 casual competition 3 vs 3

Keeping it Local! The small local events of around 15-20 players are some of the most satisfying things to create, attendance is small enough to see and talk to everyone, but there are enough bodies around to make it feel like a good turnout, at least... its more than just practice. In October of 2023, we hosted a mix and match 3 vs 3 competition, which was attended by 21 players from across the south. A mixture of both ICON teammates and visiting players from other clubs or the local scene. The Setup As with the spring practice, it takes time to fill out the teams for these events, people wait to see if it will be busy enough to bother... people wait to see if they have the cash at the time etc. etc. In reality, the later people book into something, the less time organisers have to actually make it good. There is no point in spending hours preparing some little extra, when there might be no budget, or the event might not even go ahead anyway.. so why spend the time and money on t...

March 2023 Structured Practice

Image
Preamble  In June of 2022 we wanted to find a way to get two days of practice into a weekend. As true believers of #SupportLocal and you'll find that the brands we tend to work with are based down here in the south of the U.K. too. With that, we're lucky to have  Paintball South  as a local venue that also happen to have a speedball field that they are willing to let us take over for full weekends at a time. So we booked a weekend, reached out to our friends and pulled together a structured practice in our style. What happened, was it turned out to be something other southerners fancied taking part in, with 13 players from other organisations joining the wider ICON club over the weekend to see 21 players grace the field. We made an attempt to open up a practice in October of 2022, but it seems that length and weight of the 2022 season took its toll on everyone. the numbers just weren't there to make it viable. Spring Cleaning Cut to 2023, the days are starting to get long...

Jersey Design

Image
The process of creating something that represents you as a team or cub.. or even as a "Brand" can be long and potentially disappointing. One person's idea of cool is another's idea of cringe, so you can end up coming to awkward compromises such as removing design aspects, or following the trend of everyone else. I've given UKWM a hard time in previous posts about how much of my time as a resource those events take to edit photos for.. But I've also probably had similar amounts of time returned by James in review and design work. Every incarnation of the ICON jersey that has seen the light of day so far has been crafted as a learning piece by me, and managed to completion by James. With design influence coming from either a select number of players in the early days... to direct team sponsors in more recent years.  Clever Kitchen have been funding the jersey refresh for the past two seasons and as such you will notice they have taken a spot in the forefront of ...
